How we work now?

The garden runs with various volunteers, and committed people doing different aspects of work, which are done in a co-ordinated way. John Hancox – chair of the Children’s Garden – acts as the garden co-ordinator, helping organise volunteers and visits…

In 2007 we did some development work, and decided to set up some working sub groups – rather than trying to do all business as a full committee.

This new way of working is still developing.

  • An arts and events group – to organise arts, storytelling and concerts
  • A toddlers committee – which runs the toddler group on a Thursday
  • A cooking and healthy eating group – harvesting and cooking with the children
  • An educational working group
  • Children’s Committee Events – which is everyone

Everyone a Grower!

The Children’s Garden in the Botanics is now working well, and it has been a brilliant learning experience, but our vision is to help children right across Glasgow to get the benefit of a Children’s Garden near to where they live. A Children’s Garden should be as widespread as a playpark.

We have been working hard to support and improve school gardens and also have helped to establish projects who could benefit from some input from volunteers. We can even sometimes find funding for materials as well.

Piloting the wee gardens – where individual families plant a mini allotment in a half barrel. We hope to take that out to people all over the city. We believe that providing people with a little space to grow things themselves is a fantastic way to get children start growing for themselves.

We’re very interested in developing more Children’s Gardens in parks, new housing developments and with housing associations – and if you’d like to discuss how, please contact us.
